Sew-em up PLUQ + IXUQ + my sewing machine

Equals a poncho liner based under quilt. I bought a couple poncho liners this spring to mess around with and recently got a sewing machine. After looking at the DIY IX Underquilt and the Sew-em up PLUG threads, I decided to combine them into my first DIY project. I learned first that I am terrible at sewing. Second, pins are your friend. 3rd, the whole differential cut business was a lot harder than I thought it would be. A few hours of cursing and learning how to use my machine yielded this.

It has 3 layers of Insultex, a shock cord suspension and shock cord at the ends for venting/tightening.

I need to get an indoor hammock stand so I can test these things. I used WAY more shock cord than I need for the suspension. I'll cut it down a bit after I can play with it on the hammock. Its a heavyweight at 25 Oz but it should work for a summer/3 season. Most likely this will be my loaner quilt as my winter incubator is only 4oz more and packs smaller than this one, but time will tell.

Looks good. Did you use darts at the ends or a cinch cord?

I used folded and sewn pleats and shock cord cinches.

Doody, Looks good from here. Great for a first DIY. Other than the Grograin edging it looks just about like mine. The sewing will improve with each project. I'm sure very few first were works of art, mine wasn't. Just finished a couple of projects, a permanent UQ for my indoor hammock and a new hiking hammock. One idea that I saw here and would like to Thank whomever it was, is to use paper clips instead of pins while hemming. It worked great for me. The indoor UQ took a couple of tries but it keeps out the AC induced CBS. Thanks for sharing.

doody, how is the UQ working out? How low have you had it down to at this point? I'm thinking about something similar for an inexpensive way to get started with a UQ. I sleep pretty warm, but I'm curious as to how others thing this performs.

Small earth magnets work great too.

    How much insultex

I just ordered my liner off ebay and want to add some insulation. How much did you add, I do see it says three layers, does it come in a standard size and who did you order it from? Thanks for any info. How did you add spacing between the layers of insultex or did you? I have seen fron DIY that it comes in 60 inch widths so I'm thinking you used 3 yards?

I got everything from here. http://www.diygearsupply.com/cgi-bin/isle.cgi?type=all I ordered 3 yards of insultex. For the airspace I folded an sewed offset pleats like in the IX underquilt sticky. I used 1.5in Grosgrain for the channels/edges. I've had this down to the mid 50s and was plenty warm. Had to take my feet out of the foot box of my topquilt, in fact. I used these two threads as a guide.
