Adjusting the size of the hammock....

I made a gathered end hammock using Knottys sticky and learned a lot. Now I'm thinking I might have made it too long. When I lay in it, easy to lay flat on the diagonal and very comfortable, there is at least two feet on either end of me showing. Would it be okay in your opinion to remove some of this excess length, thinking maybe 6 inches on each end. I'm not a gram worrier but my hammock looks much bigger than the commercial speers, and HH and others I see on the websites. What would you do?

My suggestion is to leave one end alone and on the other end move the suspension closer incrementally until you reach your optimal comfort level.

my favorite hammie is an 11 footer. i'm a six footer.
if it fits between the trees and under your tarp i'd opt for the comfort.

    have to remeasure tomorrow

I'm going ot lay it out on the ground tomorrow and measure from end to end. Will take into consideration it is very comfortable and me being 5 11 I might leave it alone and not worry about it not looking like the sleek commercial products.

I made mine 8ft long a long time ago...after adding 3 more feet to it recently I was so much more happy and comfortable. I am 6ft and for your height you need a 11ft and then make 83% of that be for the ridge line. With my ridge line at 83% of total the hammock hangs at like 9ft and is very comfy for me.

Don't cut it, just whip it closer in and let the rest hang until you are sure.

    adjusting hammock

I bought the material, 1.9 nylon from Seattle Fabrics because our Joannes didn't have the color I wanted. I have bought material from Joannes with success though. Now I purchase mostly from Forums advertisers and cottage industry people listed with the Hammock Forums. I'm thinking of doing several different things with this hammock, maybe even a liner underquilt, or adding a double layer for insertion of the closed cell foam, or completely make a new hammock for backpacking on a thruhike hopefully next year.

Before you cut it you can try it shorter by putting a toggle in it and moving the suspention from the knot to the toggle. This will give you an idea of how it will lay as a shorter hammock. I did this to mine and realized it felt better with the extra length. So glad I didn't cut first.
If you don't try due to fear of failure you've already failed due to fear.
