While I agree that 'pacing sucks' I find it 100% effective for me.
    1 'giant step' = ~1 meter = ~3.3 feet

    5 giant steps = ~15'-16' = perfect hang.

I do this simply because i do not own hiking poles, or I would use Grizzs' method. It feels odd goose-stepping around trees in the bush, but it works good enough,
    I ride a recumbent.
I like to HAM it up on the CW.
    I use Linux.
    I play go.
Of course I sleep in a hammock!

+1 to that method. It's quick, reliable and I don't have to worry about pulling a muscle stepping off the "giant" steps. The suspension system is flexible to a degree. Make sure to check for window makers and girth of the trees.

They have done studies on this... and 60% of the time it works all the time.

I look for 2 trees that look close to the right distance, back up against one & if it's 7 to 11 steps to the next, I look for widow-makers & set up camp. I don't mind the pacing & It's 100% right the first time. If I'm JUST setting up the hammock, I can usually "Eyeball it" as the hammock only needs about 10' But my tarp needs a minimum of 14' & for some reason I can almost never get that right just by looking, so I'd rather pace it off than use redhawktx's method,,,,, as fun as that is.

I should add that, the more I set up, the better I'm getting at Eyeballing the distance, but I still step it off, as that takes only a few seconds & tying up the tarp then having to take it down & find another site takes much longer.

First I eye ball for trees that look about the right distance apart. Then a cursory glance upwards and around to look for the dreaded widow maker. Finally I'll pace the trees, if it's 6 paces it's perfect, 7 or 8 paces I can make it work, 9-10 paces is getting to the limits of my rig.

Luckily I'm pretty good at eyeballing distances.

I can eyeball pretty well, but I still go over there and push on the trees and look for widowmakers and poison ivy and other nasties (hornet nests, etc) and pace off around 7 -9 paces. I'll also look for 'nice to haves' too -- good views, which way the sun will come up, which way the breezes might come from, extra shelter from wind or rain, etc.

I drew this up a while back, hopefully it is helpful. My solution: Three paces, reach, hang. Give it a try.

Note: a "Step" is move ONE foot forward (Usually about 2' for a 5' 7" person), a "Pace" is 2 steps Starting (for example) by stepping out with your right foot, & the "Pace" ends when you are standing on your Left foot & are about 4' from your starting point. The distances are a rough average, & if you are pacing or stepping for actual measured distance, it would be a good idea to measure your steps & paces several times. Mine are actually 2' & 4' respectively, with about a 3" to 4" variance per step, depending on how tired I am & terrain & stuff.
