    N. GA Car Camping Help.

hey guys. My buddy and I are looking to head up to N Ga on Labor Day weekend to do some camping. Can Yall recommend any place that we can car camp and has trees to setup our hammocks? I know have platforms so I assume to trees have been removed.

    NWGa hang

Cloud land canyon park is pretty nice. They have a parking lot and short trails back to the camping sites. I've hung there before.

Lots of primative camping in the Chattahoochee National forest.

My favorite area is Blue Ridge WMA. Just northwest of Dahlonega. Tons of dirt forest service roads. AT start just south of it and cuts through there. Three Forks(AT road crossing) and Jones Creek (Jake/Bull Mt) are two areas in the WMA but they tend to fill up quick on holiday weekends.

Second would be Chattahoochee WMA. Just north of Helen which is a faux Bavarian village. They have Octoberfest that probably starts on Labor Day. If you enjoy drinking beer with large crowds you may want to give it a try. Only thing I don't like about it is that nobody goes there anymore, it's just too crowded. Thx Yogi!!!

Don't be worried that WMA stands for wildlife management area. The only two seasons open Labor Day weekend are squirrel and dove so if you refrain from scampering through the treetops and flying through the air at impossibly high speeds you should be safe.

Here is a link to Forest Service map page. Any questions just send me a PM. http://www.fs.usda.gov/wps/portal/fs...20Publications

My favorite place in that area is the Chattoogah River Trail. I usually park at Burrells Ford on the SC side. You can camp for free at many primitive sites along the river, and some are within just a few hundred feet of the trail head, but I'm pretty sure I also saw a car camping area just south of the Ford. Some truly wonderful sites are available if you're willing to hike in a ways.
"The Road goes ever on and on,
Down from the door where it began.
Now far ahead the Road has gone,
And I must follow, if I can.
    Pursuing it with eager feet
Until it joins some larger way
Where many paths and errands meet.
And whither then? I cannot say."

Agree with Col. Panic. Slowly work your way thru the madhouse that is Helen. On the north end of town turn left across the bridge at the tube rental. After crossing the bridge take immediate right turn. At the end of the trail we found a campground. Not sure of the name it may be on the map.
Most of us end up poorer here but richer for being here. Olddog, Fulltime hammocker, 365 nights a year.

Are you talking about Low Gap Campground?

Thanks for all the info guys. Really wanted to stay at Vogel State Park but it looks full that weekend. Stayed there a few times as a teenager

I'm a fan of Cooper Creek and Mulky creek near Suches, GA about 30 minutes from Dahlonega. Hung there in May, plenty of trees near sites. When I was there they were doing some improvements to the site, fresh gravel, water lines, bathrooms, etc. So there were no fees while there was construction going on. And the fishing is good too. Get there early on a holiday weekend

Mulky and Cooper Creek are about 45 minutes from Vogel, first come first served.

Wildcat Creek near Lake Burton is a FS campground that is hammock friendly and has some really good trout fishing too. Also, Red Top Mtn State Park on Lake Allatoona and Rocky Mountain PFA north of Rome are two more of our favorite places to camp.
