Backpacker magazine also barely recognizes the cottage industry makers (or ignores them altogether). I suspect this is because they (the cottage industry players) don't buy big ad space in the magazine or the website.

Sorry Shug, I renewed without knowing the outcome of the contest.

$12 for 3 years is a great deal - it's simple eye candy for the hiker mind.

I gave up on Backpacker. A few years ago they changed the format so none of the content takes more than five minutes to read. It's like a bunch of little sounds bites all strung together. Bicycling did the same thing. Disappointing.

It also could be that the cottage industry doesn't send them gobs of product to test, so they don't have tons of exposure to it. I've also noticed this, but they do often have some smaller businesses in their "staff favorite" sections, because Tim in marketing likes the food produced by Mary Jane's Farm and he gets to say so in the gear list. Other than that, I agree that they don't put much in the monthly issues other than the big guys.

I obviously have no inside info on this though. Just my guesses.

Gave it a shot for 3 yrs. If a get a handful of ideas for $12 it will likely be worth it.

Anyone know how this works with existing subscriptions? If I order this will I tag on 3 years to my existing account or will I just start getting two issues?
The following is a quote from their website

"I'm already a subscriber. Can I renew through you?

Yes, definitely. Before you add a magazine to your cart, select the radio button "Renew my Subscription". Once the publisher receives the order, they will tack on the additional year(s) to your current account with them. Ensure that the delivery name and address matches the current subscription exactly to avoid a duplicate account being created."

    Hope this helps
