    Waterproof ripstop at joanns?

Well I went in tonight to buy 1/3Yd of orange ripstop for a stuff sack, and when I got home and started sewing it, I noticed it felt more, "plasticy" then reguler ripstop. So I put my arm in the stuff sack, went to the sink, and turned it on. Let it run for more then a minute, with my arm and hand touching the fabric as well on the inside. When I took it out, it was completely dry. I was also able to fill the stuff sack with water, and It only leaked out the sewed seams. When I applied pressure though, water beaded through from the inside.

Could I have stumbled upon sil nylon at joanns? it was orange as well, and almost transparent. I think it was lighter in weight then the 1.9 I get from them too, because I could see through it.

If it beaded through the fabric, this tells me it's not silnylon. Sil wouldn't have started beading.

Most likely it's the calendered ripstop. I've seen both calendered and non-calendered in many colors at the local JoAnn Fabric. The calendered would probably be more water resistant than the non.

Most of the ripstop from JoAnn's that I've weighed comes in around 1.6-1.7oz. per sq. yard.

I took a piece about 1'x1' today and held the corners and filled with water. none leaked out, and I held it there for about 2 minutes. I may add tie outs and fill with water and leave outside tonight. If none leaks through tomorrow morning, that isnt water resistent, its water proof. And I thought calendered had a "shiny" or "slick" side. this has both feeling and looking the same.

    Seems contradictory. I'm confused.

I picked up a yard of blaze orange water proof, weather resistant fabric at Hancocks a couple weeks ago. It sounds like the same stuff you have there. Although I don't believe it is nylon, not sure what it is though. Of course I'm going to be using for a Packcover/gear hammock/hammock chair as seen here or a Pack cover/ gear Hoammcok/ Jerry chair as seen here.

I may go back and get a bit more of the material to make a gravity filter bag out of as well.

what I mean by that is it held water just fine, but when I twisted the top shut and sqeezed it, water beaded through. like you would squeeze a balloon.
