    Slipping Constrictor Rope

    Hey all

my WBBB had spend quite a long time in its bag with me spending the winter/spring home .
Now i remembered i wanted to change the suspension from my single ring+ slipped buntline hitch to contrictor rope and quickly spliced together two contrictors with fixed eyes before i left for a week to france .

Unfortunately the contrictors did not do their job and i was forced to spend the week on the floor of course i could easily have changed the suspension back after the first night but nights where quite cold anyway so i tolerated the ground dwelling ..

Now i'm unsure as to the source of the problem
I went as per the recommendations for the lenght though on the finished contrictor the burried/contricted part is only 20cm/8" long
It appears that i have used the original 1/8" Dynema from Brandon for the constrictor
and metric 3mm Dyneema for the standing/constricted part.
But could it really be this teensy tiny difference in diameter ?

When properly milked they are strong enough to withstand my pulling force but when i get in the hammock they loose their grip after a short instance , even with constant pulling force on the loose end of the contrictor to keep it shut , it's slowly slipping to gently put me to the ground

Theres a few posts dealing with this type of suspension.
Some remedies include hanging a small weight from the loose ends to provide a slight tension, or adding prussik loops to the loose ends to provide tension.
Check Grizz's video here and the following thread for tricks.
Thanks to grizz for all the good info!

You've created what is know as a Utility Constrictor Rope or UCR type of suspension. The bury on these needs to be longer based on the diameter of the rope. I used to use a UCR from 7/64" Amsteel and the bury was 9" or so if my memory serves correct.

Also as Gargoyle points out you need to apply tension to the tail end of the constrictor otherwise it will easily slip on you. In your picture, this appears, to the the backspliced portion that is in the lower middle area of the shot.

    Hopes this helps.

    Cheers

It's thanks to those threads that i wanted to build the UCR suspension = )
2x range for the same length + less additional rope VS a Whoopie just sounds too good

I had a prussik on the "inner" line going towards the tree and clipped the free tail-end of the ucr in a mildly thought position - it still slipped. The original length of the bury was 9" or so , calculated in fids after a recommendation from i dont know where , of course with the new core the part is shortened .

So i guess i just need to try again with a finished bury that is longer unless someone already had an experience with a 3mm bury in 1/8"

    thank you so far!

    thanks I'm on it

Is there a clever way to undo a backsplice? short of cutting it at the end?

Longer bury, yes, but also do something to supply some tension on that loose end toward the tree. Best bet is to use a bungee loop attached to the very end and prussic it around the tree rope. It's the tension on the whole length of the constrictor that keeps it from slipping.

Yes, you can pull it out with a crochet hook.

Edit -- BTW, my UCR buries are at least 30 cm long and usually 35cm or so. I use a piece of slingshot tubing to add tension to the loose end.

dang i should have thought of that :P , worked quite well , thank you

I now made 28cm /11" buries , which was about the longest i could do with the part i already had whilst keeping an eye on the tail, so assuming the wheather permits tommorows test shall tell whether that is the solution

Perfect! no more problems , i didnt challenge the CR by trying it with an unclipped end, but i think i will soon resort to some kind of elastic whipping instead of the prussik+mini-biner i'm using.

awesome suspension, probably slightly more hassle than a whoopie sling but less weight and more adjustability
