Hi all, this is my first post to the forum, although I have been hammock camping for some time now.
I just did a nice ultralight solo hike in the Sneffels Wilderness around Telluride. I use a hennesey ultralight asymmetric plus a ridge rest foam pad. I was toasty and dry every night. 3 of the 5 nights i was out were above 10000' and one night was above the treeline at 12000'...i managed to find two spruces that could support the hammock! Even with 5 days food+ and extra emergency meal, my total pack weight was well under 25lbs.
One HUGE advantage I find with hammock camping is that I keep my tarp cover read at hand in an outer side pocket of my pack. It takes about 2 min to set up a quick shelter...a huge plus when you are hiking in monsoon season.
One discussion thread I'd like to start or revisit pertains to stove selection. I used an Esbit solid fuel burner plus a GSI cup for boiling water. I was actually disappointed with the over all performance...although it was extremely lightweight and compact. It was pretty much useless if I was camping higher than 11000 or 12000 ft. I was wondering if others have had similar experiences or have a better suggestion...While not exactly a hammock topic, since this group does attack other lightweight bikers, it seems appropriate to discuss it here.
