Is it safe to hang with this suspension?

If you are trying tol go lighter then you are going to want to ditch the rings altogether. They weigh a lot more than a couple of carbon fiber toggles for whoopie slings. I'm a huge fan of the webbing ring buckle system but it can be somewhat heavy by comparison. You'll need _some_ webbing for tree huggers. Don't chintz on it either. Swallow the weight penalty and get the good stuff. Otherwise you could be back sleeping on the ground. There have been a few reports of lightweight webbing failing in the field recently. Not a good thing.

Even with new suspension webing/rope ect, never hang higher than you are willing to fall. I have never had my suspension fail but I did have a couple of 4x4 post break while I was hanging.

I'm trying to go lighter, so anything that isn't at least as light as the current cord won't do. Webbing is out, unfortunately. I've been so tempted by the convenience of webbing though...won't lie about it!

I'm not sure there is a significant weight penalty in 1" seat belt webbing vs the spectra cord Hennessy uses.

The real question is how much cord between the damaged section and the end of the hammock? Clove hitch to ring does not take much. Knotted loop takes more. If you don't have enough for a knot the rest of the discussion is pointless as you must replace the whole rope or risk bodily damage.
