I'm thinking about the same thing, Tenaya. On one end (head end), he has the pocket, just inside the channel for the whoopie sling. I'm not sure if it's centered. On the other end, he has the cord lock for the shock cord coming out around the same area as the whoopie sling. This makes me think the shock cord is tied off on both sides at the "head end," runs along both sides, until it emerges as a loop with a cord lock on one of the sides around the channel for the whoopie sling. I'm assuming there's a separate channel further in on the material than the whoopie sling channel, which houses the shock cord. I'm going to try it out now and see if I can get it to work. Hope that makes sense, I'll try to post pics

Made one up over the weekend. For the shock cord, I ended up using a yarn needle to push it through the side channels. The yarn needle easily poked through the 1.1 ripstop I used, so after I sewed the side channels and then the end channels, I just poked the needle and shock cord into a spot on the side channel in the opening of the end channel. I threaded it up a side channel, poked it out of the side channel on the opposite end, ran it through the open end channel (just to keep it tucked out of the way until I could install the whoopie slings & gather the ends), poked back into the other side channel, back up to the other end, out and then through the other end channel, and then joined the shock cord ends in a cord lock. Can you follow that?

So will poking it directly through the fabric, without any kind of eye or buttonhole, hold up okay? Only time will tell, but I don't think I will be a lot of tightening or loosening of the shock cord. We will see. It only took me an hour to make, so not a big deal to replace.

Besides, this was so easy to make, I made an extra one without the shock cord, so for "basecamp" trips I could leave one as a full-time gear hammock and one for a seat.

Sorry that I haven't replied - just got back into town. Sounds like some decisions were already made, but I will try to shoot the sewing details into a video so that you can see what I have done.

Look forward to seeing some pics of your project

Oh no worries, this looked so cool I couldn't wait to try one. But I'm sure we would love to see more details on how you did it. I for one would love to see some more detail on how you did the storage pocket. Is is a whole stuff sack sewn in or more of a pocket? If the latter, how did you do the draw cord channel? Thanks!

This is the most versatile piece of gear I have ever seen!

I'm putting in my order from Quest!

One more question: Where did you find the 1/16" shock cord? The smallest I've ever found is 3/32". I would love to find smaller!

You could try Joann's Fabric if you have one nearby. I found some in a blister pack over by the velcro, elastic and such. http://www.joann.com/joann/catalog/productdetail.jsp?pageName=search&flag=true&PRODID =prd2904

Good to hear you got it put together. I just finished my sewing but for the cellphone pocket, and now I await the shock cord from DIY gear. Took me longer than I thought it would, but this new (old) sewing machine threw me for some loops. . .

Pics to come once it's all shocked and whoopied

    New Video showing further detail

Thanks for all of the great feedback and comments that I've gotten!

I've received a number of requests for greater detail on the hammock's construction. I've created a new video that I hope will help clarify some of the details.

    Thanks again!
