Question Hex Rainfly 30D Sylnylon Question

Well, I got my new Explorer Ultralite Asym Zip last week. I decided to go with the Hex Rainfly 30D Sylnylon with the unit.

I have a question for those that have this rainfly. Do you run a separate ridgeline to support the rainfly, or just secure the two ends of rainfly at the ridgeline?

I am wondering what others are doing and why.

I used the system last weekend for the first time out and all went well. I am looking forward to using this fall on our annual Pacific Crest Trail work. We do a different section of the trail each year.

I believe most people use a seperate ridgeline. it just makes it alot easier and gives you more options then just hookin it to the stock suspension
Dale Gribble: I'm thinking, "new hammock." For me, laying and swaying in a hammock is like a steady morphine drip without the risk of renal failure.

Randy : yea but just remember yer roots and where ya come from....you got Hennessy in yer blood son......

I tend to use a separate ridgeline, with the ends of the tarp attached to it via microbiners that are attached to the ridgeline with prusik knots. Passing beneath the tarp it takes the tension off the ridge-line seam in the tree-to-tree direction, and is easy to slide to center over the hammock.

Entirely a matter of preference. Some folks use a ridge-line that's over the tarp (so as not to have to be concerned with rain tracking the ridge-line under), others just hook up the ends of the tarp to the trees and don't use a ridge-line at all (which is the lightest option).

    They all work just fine.

+1 on what Grizzly Adams said. This is how I hang my tarp now. I had a hard time keeping the tarp tight when it was hooked to the hammock suspension because of the hammock movement when you got in it.

I use a seperate line. I picked up the single line from whoopieslings.com. Works like a charm.

I have the 70 hex tarp, and normally don't use a ridgeline, but instead I use the tie outs on the ends of the tarp and simply attach those directly to the tree with Fig 9s to adjust the tension as needed.

+1 on Owl's method, except I pass the line(s) around the tree and then tie off with a rolling hitch which is adjustable. No. 9s sound like a good idea.

Has anyone ever tied 2 loops in their ridgeline so that they could tie some elastic tubing to the loops to keep the tarp tight
