    Modular quilt system?

hey guys.... for those who dont have a great attention span heres the skinny:
the goal is trying to modify the usgi MSS into a versatile multi layered comprehenseive (all)4 season TQ.

i know its kinda heavy...but its alot of gear in one tight package (and thats also why were gonna mod it). please open mind you will keep? also i am assuming you WONT use the bivy with this. each bag can be used alone as well as having hookups to create a SUPER BAG
its like the thundercats....individually they are sweet....but when combined they are "THUNDERCATS HOOOOOOO"
    slightly related proof: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=enQXITlKRgg

just a question. well more of a thought that i wanted to see if it was viable. i didnt see it in the forums....but honestly i didnt look THAT hard.

anyway. im going to post a link:...nvmd i was but all of them are retarded... heres a general excerpt:

    Description/Features

NSN: 8465-01-445-6274 (4-Part Modular Sleep System)

    .
The 4-Part Modular Sleep System sleeping bags and other components are constructed to be used in conjunction with each other, or separately to complete an interoperable system known as the extreme cold weather sleeping bag. ◦Non-locking slide fastener self repairs if jammed or snagged
    ◦Draft flap prevents heat loss
◦Hood adjusts for heat retention; includes nylon drawcord and barrel lock
    ◦DIMENSIONS: 92" x 37"
    •Black Intermediate Bag
    ◦Temperatures to -10°
    ◦Free from cold spots
◦Insulation does not migrate in the bag
◦Anatomically designed foot box contains twice the insulation as the bag
◦Sewn-in, quilted chest collar prevents air drafts up and down through the hood
◦Hood adjusts for heat retention; includes nylon drawcord and barrel lock
    ◦DIMENSIONS: 87" x 35.5"
    •Woodland Camouflage Waterproof Bivy Cover
◦Made from waterproof, moisture-vapor-permeable material with all seams heat sealed
◦Includes snap fastener and slide fastener
    ◦DIMENSIONS: 85" x 28" x 35"
    •Black Stuff Sack
    ◦Constructed of water resistant materials
    ◦Compressible to one cubic foot
◦Six 1"-wide nylon webbing straps adjust by ladderlock buckles
◦Reinforcement webbing is sewn around the circumference of the bag

Did you get a hammock to go with that? Cause it might make a difference if you are setting it up for one type or another.

no im still looking, was going for eno but alot of people convinced me there is more bang for my buck options. the though was these can be had for cheap on ebay. which would mean i could concievably use it just remove the hoods, zippers and whatnot.. and viola i would have a two part system that i could take in part or whole depending on the time of year.

Well, if you can get it cheap... why not? Just be super careful with the seam ripper. 12.5 pounds. Man.

It would be ideal to keep your entire shelter system (hammock, tarp, and insulation) in the 6lbs area for 3 season. But I'm also taking into consideration that the 12.5lbs is full blown winter weight.

I would be interested to see your results.... Mum-ra

i know it says its a heavy system and when it compresses its basically a cubic foot brick. but the bivy cover. is approx 3lbs. so with the zippers n unmodded with the compression sac its about10 lbs. that would be if you were taking the whole system for a -30 (i dont believe it will go that low without the bivy but maybe due to the layers of hammock and tarp?

    the green bag is:
Patrol Sleeping Bag 30 to 50 Degrees F
Mummy design for temperate climates. Use with Bivy for slightly colder and wet zones.

    Shell & Lining:
1.9oz ripstop nylon with water resistant finish.

    Insulation Fill:
    Polarguard HV resin bonded polyester

    Adjustable Hood

    Length 90” – 92”
    Width 36” – 37”
    Camouflage Green 483
    Weighs 3lbs.

    the black bag is:
Intermediate Cold Weather Sleeping Bag –10 to +30 Degrees F
Mummy Design. Use with Bivy for colder and wet zones, or insert inside the Patrol Bag for extreme cold environments.

    Shell Lining:
1.9oz ripstop nylon with water resistant finish.

    Insulation Fill:
    Polarguard HV resin bonded polyester

    Adjustable Hood

    Length 85” – 87”
    Width 34.5” – 35.5”
    Color: Black 357
    Weighs 4lbs.

so breaking it down still a bit heavy, but from what i can tell, the specific information is a pain in the *** to get.....
specifically the above post i dropped stated all its 12.5lbs.

but maybe my math is wrong, but individually the bivy is 2.5lbs, the green bag 3lbs and the black bag 4 so the compression sac is 3lbs?
    what.....

I think you are going to have a challenge in keeping this massively heavy underquilt suspended and snug to the bottom of the hammock. I am interested to see what you come up with for a suspension system.

    Cheers

i was more thinking it would be my top quilt, but maybe with further mods it can be both. hm.....green would be in outside bag, and doesnt have the double stuff footbox like the cold weather black bag. maybe i would be able to remove the zipper itself leaving the material and sew in the cordage needed?

the weight is because its synth and all thaat jaz.. but i think its all h2o resistant....fudge.

the bags seem to be quite large, maybe you can convert them to a peapod-like system!?

i wouldnt want to carry that for long distances repeatedly though
