packing pads

Well I just received my 1/4" wide Gossamergear pad. Now I need to figure out how to pack the thing. Anyone willing to share how they pack their foam pads in their packs? Currently I am using a GG 2012 murmur. Since I am a UL backpacker my gear is pretty compact.

My ideas so far are:

1. to find a way to use it to give the pack shape
2. to find a pack or adjust mine, so I can roll the pad up and attach below pack
3. try to fold the pad up flat and use it as a flat frame.

Any ideas on what everyone does with their pads would be much appreciated.

#3 option works well. Or just roll and strap to pack. Either way....your good to go!

At 39"x59", I think your only choice is to fold it in half lengthwise, roll it up and attach it to the outside of your pack.

I am interested to find out how others pack this pad.

I use the GG Nightlight Sleeping Pad (Torso length). It's pre-scored into thirds and folds nicely into my packs. On my ULA packs, it replaces the rigid backing it came with. The GG pad by itself is kind of sticky. On my Zpacks blast and Osprey packs, I wrap it in Tyvek then put it in first against the back of the pack. Tyvek works as a ground cloth and makes the other items slide into the pack more easily.

I use the same GG pad as the frame for my pack currently as insurance for going to ground when using a UQ. Do you use just the torso length or do you supplement something under your legs?

I primarily use my under quilt and bring the pad to supplement or good to ground. In the winter my dog has dibs on it (usually below 20* and on snow)

I roll mine and affix it to the top of my pack. of course i use one of those old external frame stansport packs

Another option is to roll it in a tube shape and pack items inside of the pad. This will also give the pack some structure

thats eactly what i was about to suggest- it gives your pack structure (if its frameless, and therefore will making packing things inside easier) and takes up less space than rolling and stowing would.

Just tried this. With a pad this wide it takes up the whole volume of my GG Murmer pack. No room to put anything. Looks like I will have to figure out how to lash it to the bottom of the pack. Anyone have any advice on doing this? I was thinking of putting two loops on the bottom of the pack I make and then using those as anchor points to lash the pad on.
