i think it would slip. the rings stack on one another and pinch the strap evenly between them because they are slightly offset but tangent. biners have contours which will reduce surface contact. the other issue I see is biners have a smaller gap at the top and bottom, generally not the same width as the strap unlike on a ring, most of them have a diameter equal or greater. the smaller opening on a biner would cause the strap to fold which wouldn't allow proper clamp force within the joint. if you're looking for simplicity, how come you just dont feed one end of the tree stap into itself and tighten around the tree then just the other eyelet, do a couple loops through with the rope and a few half hitches?
