    Just scored some Tyvek

    I went dumpster diving at a home construction site and got a 2' x 4' piece and a 3' x 5' piece of tyvek.
Now, what to do with it? Anyone have experience making a pack cover out of it? From the Dupont website it is 1.8 oz/yd, so making stuffsacks only seems to make sense if the have to be waterproof, otherwise why bother? Would I have seam blowouts if I made a sleeping bag compression sack and used tyvek tape?
Man, this stuff is noisy too. I've heard of people using big pieces as cheapo tarps, and I might if I ever get a hold of a big enough piece, but how do you sleep if it's at all breezy?
    Give me some suggestions!

Take a look at this thread:

All kinds of stuff you can do with it.

According to the thread above, the Tyvek tape is pretty pricey, but surely it is not cost prohibitive.

    Enjoy your great find!

throw them in a wash cycle, no soap and hang to dry; the agitation softens the stiffness somewhat, and the usual folding/rolling/stuffing will further tone down the nosiness.

This thread was what got me looking for tyvek in the first place! I wonder aloud if anyone has some tape left overs that they don't need.......

In those sizes? Make tent stake bags or other tough envelopes. I have wrapped book in scraps for mailing. Keep a piece in your backpack for sitting on, a camp kitchen "tablecloth, or a "doormat" under your hammock. Keep a piece in the trunk for putting on chains or otherwise crawling under the car.

I softened mine by washing with no detergent and then air drying in the dryer with a pair of old tennis shoes to soften it. It took several cycles but it finally became soft and much quieter.

I've got some polyester ripstop typically used for kites that's a bit noisy, running it through the dryer with tennis balls worked a charm to soften it up.

I've used Tyvek tape and carpet tape with great success. The Tyvek fails before the glues do...

On a compression sack, they're waterproof for a while, but all that wrinkling eventually causes pinholes to appear at the wrinkle points... I don't see why it wouldn't work for a while...
