Last year on the SHT I was bumped awake fairly hard. I was hanging right by a river by a game trail. I knew not to hang there but I was tired and they were the best two and nearly only, suitable trees. Didn't see what it was but I was hanging quite high. I figured it was a deer going down for a drink. Bear never even crossed my mind until reading these posts.

Nothing as exciting as a bear or a snake, but for what it's worth this is my most memorable animal experience.

Camping out in New Zealand while on a fishing trip with my father (pre-hammocks) and a Kiore got between the tent wall and the flysheet. He woke up with it scrambling up and down his back through the material.

I still laugh out loud every time I remember the look on his face!

Waking up in the morning and seing wild boars tracks under your hammock makes you very happy about your high suspension ;-)

Another night, a squirrel threw nuts/accorns at us; he didn't appreciate that we choose his tree to hang…

My scouts and I camping at Cave Run Lake in KY last April, bout 1am, loudest crashing thru the forest and snuffling sounds you'd ever of heard, suddenly something big and fast nudges me thru my tent (Ughhh, I know)... then a huge AARROOOOO! The other Scout leader comes sailing out of his Hennesy, I came out of the tent, expecting to see Cerebus and the Hounds of Hell coming at us, turns out it was a couple Blue-Tick hounds and 2 hunters (maybe coon hunting), and they were hot on the scent of something.

One boy in his tent, never looked out, but kept mutterring over and over "Oh crap, Oh crap, Oh crap...."
.... the Aardvark (earth pig)... a rather unremarkable creature whose sole claim to fame is that it is the first animal listed in the dictionary.

Raccoon sniffing the length of my body in my hammock. I could feel it's nose going along my spine and hear the quick sniffs for a few minutes. I tried to lay motionless and not laugh. Turned on my headlamp to watch him waddle off a few minutes later.

    Ooh, I've got two!

One time I was hanging in north Georgia, and I woke up in the middle of the night to the distinct scent of freshly-cut pine and bear-smell. I was too groggy after a long day of hiking to do anything more than slide my hand over my bear spray on my Warbonnet's shelf in the event the bear was feeling adventurous.

The next morning I rolled out of the hammock, stretched, started walking to my morning constitutional spot and noticed that the bear had left it's claw marks dragging down one of the trees my hammock was strapped to.

Another time, I was camped near a game trail leading up from a creek, and I was forced into wakefulness by the loud calls of a very large white-tail buck, who was walking right behind my hammock. We only had an instant of eye contact before he spooked and took off.

Best alarm clock ever. Just don't ever try to hit "snooze."
