    Whoopie sling by-pass?

Has anyone ever added loops very close to the gathered ends in addition to whoopie slings so that you could by-pass the whoopie slings in close quarters? This would shorten your absolute minimum tree distance considerably.

Would you put loops right in the tails of the whoopie slings? If so, what knot? Alpine butterflies (with an extra wrap)? Double overhand? Or would a knot weaken the whoopie slings too much when you were using them? (I'm talking 7/64ths amsteel here)

Or would you add a separate pair of continuous loops to the ends with a lark's head? Say, lark's head continuous loops about 12" long so the loops would be quite short coming off the gathered ends--very little weight penalty.

I have done this very thing on my ENO DN. I left the original loops in the gathered end channels and I put biners on them to attach to my stand. My whoopies are larks headed to the loops for use in the piney woods.

I have added short continuous loops on the ends on my hammocks and connect them via a Dutch biner to the fixed eye on the whoopis sling. In a pinch, if I have a short distance I can forgo the whoopie and hitch the webbing to the continuous loop.

Both of my wb hammocks have a loop the buckles connect to. I've used that loop and marlin spike when the trees are close.

Only pict I have of the loop and buckle.

I run a soft shackle through the channel on the hammock which makes for a closed loop on the ends. I have my whoopie slings connected to the shackle, and then another shackle for the SRL. So if I needed to I could connect directly to the SRL shackle with a carabiner or whatnot to hang in short quarters.

I also end up using this method about one out of every three trips.

    Pips,

The JRB complete suspension for the HH is set up this way from default. You get the short continuous loop to attach to the hammock ends, then a dutch biner connects this to your adjustable loop of the whoopies. I ran it this way for a while but didn't see the need for the extra hardware. The extra length started to limit some of my hanging options. I just attached the fixed eye directly to my hammock and haven't looked back.

I suppose I could have doubled up (fixed loop and continuous loop) as you described but so far I haven't had much trouble finding trees a suitable distance apart (and I don't hang indoors or on a stand).

I've still got the loops and biners if you're looking for some....

    Another Approach

Just rotate the strap around the tree, effectively "winding up" the suspension, until the hammock is nearly touching the tree. Hang something over the whoopie to protect the tree.

I have done this one, works great. To protect the whoopie and tree from damage, I just pulled the whoopie out a little and tucked the strap material under it on the first few wraps.
