This summer, I've been going through my gear after realizing that my backpack weight has been creeping up. I posted a thread here... http://www.hammockforums.net/forum/s...ad.php?t=36443

I'm about to make a 1.5" thick karo step top quilt. The 2.25" one I made for mild winter conditions is too hot in Florida (except at last years big hang) and my double IX top quilt left me cold in the near freezing night at the Swamp Runners Richloam hike in what was supposed to be spring - yeah right.

I'm planning to do the Foothills in Sept. That will be my season shakedown cruise. Recently, I've been doing some day hikes to accumulate miles on the FT (section hiking). Until the nights cool down, I can't overnight it here.

So hows it shaping up? life got real busy for me and is just now starting to relax a little. I don't think I have seen my hammock gear since the 1st annual hang. The GF and I were thinking pf doing a island hang some where in the titusville area next month when I finally am off of being on call.

Are you nuts!? That will be quite an endurance test! With any luck you'll get a hurricane that'll keep about half of the mosquitoes at bay.
On the other hand - it's Florida. So the weather could be beautiful.

You know they didn't name it Mosquito Bay fer nothin'

Maybe I am being a little optimistic, but I am going to test the waters for the first time this fall with a hike and camp in Myakka State Park and land just south in mid September. Somewhere around 16-18 miles of hiking. I am counting on many of trails having water from summer rains. No dry feet for this hike. I am trying to get things in order for longer overnight weekends later in the winter. Looking at 9/16-18 or 9/23-25.

Hi Ed you may want to check but I don't think you can Hammock hang in Myakka state park.

Not "officially." However, I did once, in the mid 1970's. That's where I saw my only panther siting in the wild! There weren't any rangers around back then. I don't know what the situation is like today.

However, that is a beautiful area. There are primitive camp sites you have to hike to. It's usually wet on that hike.

Swamp, you are correct. Not officially in the state park campgrounds. I do not approve of "skirting" the rules either. But I have other plans for nighttime hanging.

Mike, as you have mentioned, this is a remote area that shows the best of beautiful, natural Florida. There have been recent panther sightings in the area. That is truly exciting. If ONLY I could have one sighting of a Florida panther in the wild! Being wet on the hike is a small price to pay.
