I'm with the "bo-lyn" crowd. Call it what you want just make sure you don't tie it like a landlubber...you know the rabbit hole and tree thing. Instead that part should be accomplished in one smooth motion. Hmm, why'd I bring it up when I can't explain it?

Crud! Self taught knot guy--been calling it bow (like "bow and arrow") line (like, uh... "line"). I'm starting to feel like quite the philistine now. All this time with Boy Scouts snickering behind my back and sailors saying untoward things about my mother's upbringing and character.

I can tie it--just, evidently, can't say it.

Any others I should know about ("it's spelled 'figure eight loop' but pronounced 'spam loop'. What, were you born in a house of Velcro?").

But wouldn't that be ok if you ARE (Arrr!) a landlubber? It's easier to teach kids too when you use the rabbit hole/tree analogy... (that's my story and I'm sticking to it).

You might be a lubber if...

You use the tree, rabbit and hole to tie a bowline.
You don't know if grommets are bored or punched.
You make "Arr!" jokes when others talk nautical.

Arrrr! I be a landlubberrrrrr... nautical talk makes me long for deep fried popcorn shrimp and Mrs. Paul's fish sticks with Ketchup... my favorite Captain was Captain Kangaroo... Davey Jones was a singer for the Monkees.... I don't know a Dory from a Skiff.

the rabbit comes out of the hole, goes around the tree, and back into the hole!
