Reminds me of some HF members who couldn't find grosgrain ribbon because the ladies at the fabric store acted like they couldn't understand what he was looking for.

It was originally a sailing term and spelled as two words, bow line. It was used to hold the edge of a sail to the bow of the ship and into the wind. It was probably pronounced "bow" originally.
