    August Oregon Hang

    Last weekend of August (25th-28th)
At Shellrock Lake in the Roaring River Wilderness
    (Estacada is the nearest city)

There is more than ample amount of perfect hanging trees.
There are at least two trailheads you can enter from:
Fraizer Fork turn around/campground which is about a mile hike in.
And Hideaway/Shellrock lake trailhead which is about a 1/2-3/4 mile hike in.

    NW forest pass is required.
    Dogs are Allowed
    No camping fees.
Miles of trail options for good dayhikes.

    Sound good?

I think it sounds great. That lake is a great area with plenty of places to hang. You could even easily portage in a kayak, canoe or ice chest from the shorter trail. Plenty of firewood around there too. I think that lake is probably too easily overlooked for some of the other great trails in the area. On a Sunday I only saw one family camping there and a few hikers. The longer hike from Frasiers Turnaround is not for the weak of knee or lung. I would also not suggest taking that path if you are coming with younger kids. It is however very beautiful up that area too and not to be missed.

If at all possible I will be there.

Great lake. I was there this weekend. It is 1/2 mile from trail head (Shellrock Lake Trailhead) on well maintained and relatively flat trail to main camp grounds.
    - There is an alternative trail from Frazier Turnaround that is about 1.5 miles and fairly steep and rocky. So, you can choose if you want the easy or harder hike.
    - There are also lots of day hike options from the lake, so it is good for multiple day camping.
    - There is even a car camp (Hideaway Lake) within a mile of the Shellrock Lake backpacking trail.

As we get closer to the date, I will post driving directions. In general, it is about an hour and a half from Portland with the last 5 miles on a dirt road that can be driven in small passenger cars without issue.

Is this a family-friendly event? If so, I might bring my wife and kids with me to hang out for the day. I don't think they'd be too interested in staying the night, but it would be great to meet some fellow hammock forumites.

I live near Boring so it wouldn't be too long of a drive.

What makes something non family friendly?

Here is an interesting question and something I've pondered often. What sort of things would make it a non family friendly hang?

I'm pretty sure the moderators would quickly silence anyone who planned a hang that would be non family friendly for one reason or another. "No kids" OK, but this isn't the sort of forum you plan non family friendly things on.

A family hang is kinda how this got started. I was at Hideaway Lake Car Camping with three families and a few boat loads (literally) of kids. A couple of us found Gary, Cody, (and then Bgray the next day) on the trail and made the plan. So, a family day trip (about 20 minute walk from trail head) to Shellrock lake with a family camp at Hideaway might be a good choice for you.

If you want details on Hideaway car camping, PM me and I will send over the details.

bgraybackpacker, I wasn't sure if the folks planning this event wanted kids in their camp. As a parent, the kids are the reason for the camping. But many non-parents don't appreciate kids around. I understand that and didn't want to cause any stress if that was the case.

EricFromPortland, PM is on the way. Thanks!

i'm gonna try to make this one.

i have a lot on my plate in august with movers showing up,
new animals to tend to, and a long-lost girlfriend who will
require more attention than my hammock. i'll see if our family
can make the trip, though. sounds cool.
