    Always something new to learn.

I finally got my hammock out for an over night trip, in fact two nights, at Locust Lake in PA. I found it a bit fiddly to set up, but was pleased with the result, at least for the first night.

There's the HH Expedition set up. The rings and carabiners really speeds up the process.

The first night i went with just my poncho liner. I laid on half and threw the rest over me. i was able to turn like i normally do and switch between sides and back and slept comfortably with minor fidgeting with the blanket. i was so comfortable in the morning i did something i never do when camping. I stayed in bed and hung out. On the ground i always pop up and start trying to make my back stop hurting.

Here's one of 3 winged vampires laying an ambush for me on the bug netting.

Red Tailed Hawk that was hanging around our campsite. Here it is perched on a tree 15 feet from my hammock.

And now for what i learned. Apparently my comfort level is about 60 degrees. The first night i was SUPER comfortable with just the poncho liner. It never got below 60. The second night, after some drinking at a local bar, i woke up sweat on top and shivering uncontrollably. I figured i didn't have the poncho liner under me right, so i adjusted it and went back to sleep only to wake up half an hour later in the same condition. I stubbornly continued this pattern until a 6am bio outing. On returning i put my walmart blue pad in the hammock and jumped in with my poncho liner. Fell right to sleep and was quite comfortably warm. The night time low went down to 56 degrees. I did, however, wake up with a back ache because the pad didn't let me lay on my side comfortably.

    my lessons:

    Don't be stubborn, be comfortable.

Listen when your body says it's cold and do something about it.

Get an under quilt, it may be difficult to use on the Hennessy, but it's better than a back ache.

    My thoughts on the Hennessy:

    Comfortable

The velcro opening seems odd, but works nicely.

The tarp is too small if you're not mega concerned with weight. I didn't get wet, but i had no where to change and had to WORRY about getting wet.

It's a HELL of a lot better than a tent.

Time for a 2QZQ mod. It'd be nice to unzip it to reach out rather than having to hop out through the bottom.

Nice write up, i'm looking to get a Hennessey myself. How do you feel the velcro is to use in and out?

I'm still deciding between the ultra lite backpacker zip or classic.

If i;m not mistaken i think the Nest UQ by Jacks r Better was made for the Hennessy. 2QZQ is a popular mod for hennessy's. A bigger tarp is easy to get.

Dutch: I work all day on saturdays or i'd probably stop up

TheHangingTechy: It was easy to get in and out of when hanging at about butt height. it sealed nicely once in, but was a pain to get sealed well when i got out due to having to grab both sides and line them up, then press them shut.

mbiraman: i bought it with the 2QZQ mod in mind, but refused to alter it in any way, whether tarp or zipper mod, before trying it as it was first. now i can say to my wife "i know from experience," instead of "i know from anecdote." might be easier to explain another three or four hundred

I found my Expedition took some tweaking and still does. But I know a zipper mod will fix a lot of my 'tweaking'. Nothing like getting out to gain that necessary experience.

Good write up... I think the alcohol had something to do with your comfort the last night. Something to consider.

Raul: makes sense. Increased capillary diameter plus heat sucking air on the back led me near to hypothermia i think. Plus some good ol' PA Dutch stubbornness.

Now that you are in a hammock, you can say "goodbye" to those long mileage days
