Gathered or whipped? or both perhaps

My first DIY project was based off of the My Take On DIY Hennessy Hammock. A Tutorial. thread. If I remember correctly it was said that this design gave a bit more room for the the shoulders. I really do love this design.
I have been thinking about making a gathered end hammock but don't want to loose the "room for shoulders" that the whipped end hammock provides.
So I guess my question is, would there be a down side to making a hammock with both a whipped end (head end) and a gathered end (foot end). This would save some weight in fabric and I could still have ridgeline integrated through the gather/whip.
So what do all the DIY hammock experts say out there?

Am I correct that you are comparing the following:

    1. Thread the suspension through a sewn end channel
    vs
    2. Wrapping the suspension around the hammock fabric.

I am having a debate among me, I and myself about this as I make my next hammock. My Switchback hammock threads the suspension through the end channel (which is heavily sewn) and it's my most comfortable hammock. However, I don't know if that is the reason for it's comfort.

Yep that is what I am comparing. I guess they both have a sort of whipping.

I know MAD and I were talking about types of "gathering" for hammocks in a different thread and WV brought up lopping off the corners at either end to keep some more room in the hammock. I'm experimenting with this type of hammock now. Regarding room and from what MAD said, the channel does seem to keep a wider stance. So much DIY, so little time...

Tell me about it. I have way to long of a diy list right now, with supplies bought and waiting.

    Hammock
    More Whoopie slings
    Mason Guy Lines
    Down UQ
    Hex Tarp
And if there is time a set of down sleeves and down vest.

If you go with the suspension through the gather, you can use different size rings (inside the hammock) to get different widths at the ends. The one pictured is 6 inches in diameter. It makes more room, and has more contact area with the body of the hammock, than the rings I have installed now, which are 2 inch diameter. My ends are whipped, although I also sew the channel in case I decide to switch it out. I also attach my internal ridgeline to the rings, and dont need loops on the zippered bugnet to keep it off my face.

On the DIY hammock I'm currently hanging in I have the head in gathered the Warbonnet style, and the foot end gathered and whipped the Hennessy style with corners pulled out a bit to slightly stiffen the edges. I have plenty of shoulder room and the edge on the "foot end" stay taught enough to keep my top insulation in without an attached bug net.

So yes you can gather one end and whip the other.

I normally lurk, but I had to make a diy comment concerning Hippofeet's cornfield... If you make it, they will come! Sorry, back to your regularly scheduled sewing.

The rings in the photo are (I am embarrassed to say) rings for purse handles from joanne's. They are made of a compressed wood and resin. When I hung the horse tank in the hammock, the whoopie slings "bit" into them. I am using small welded steel ones know, but I want 6" aluminum rings, welded. I also have some acrylic ones. I like the large rings for the wide hammock ends, and cause you can reach up and pull yourself around with them.
