Fellow hangers,
I am trying to gather information on whether or not there are ample places to hang at or around the following shelters:
- Gooch Mountain shelter
- Woods Hole Shelter
- Whitley Gap Shelter
Any information is greatly appreciated.

Not a problem...Gooch Mountain Shelter has plenty of campsites around it...I was not hanging last time I was there...won't make that mistake again...can't speak for Woods Hole and Whitley Gap but sure there are plenty of trees!!! I'm heading up to do a section in a couple of weeks...this time with a HH. Have a great hike...cheers, bill
I can't imagine you would ever have a problem around a shelter. I hung at gooch mtn and woods hole already. The more a shelter is used the easier it is to find a place to hang because the underbrush gets trampled. Have a great hike.

Thanks for the input guys. Last time I sectioned the A.T. I was a ground dweller. This is my first time out in a hammock on the AT (hence the questions and a bit of apprehension). I'm super excited since it was on the AT last year that I decided to get a hammock!

I would go with yes on all. Gooch definitly. I don't remember the others off hand, but I don't remember any you couldn't hang at.
Is that too much to ask? Girls with frikkin' lasers on their heads?

Hammock Engineer, appreciate it. You would know.
BTW, I enjoyed your hiking journal.

Last year I hiked from Springer to Neel's gap.
I arrived in the middle of the night and hung next to the parking lot on FS 42.
No problem hanging at Hawk Shelter or Gooch Mountain.
I freelanced at the campsite at a brook a mile or so past Woody Gulch.
I did have a problem on Blood Mountain. I finally hung between two scrubby trees that were too close together. Hammock came down in the middle of the night. The wind really blows up there.I came down slowly, Slowly, so no harm done. Finished the night in the shelter.
Hope this helps
Tom
teblum,
I don't think we will camp/hang as far as Blood mountain. We will summit in the morning.
As of now, I am trying to look over my gear list and since we are sectioning in the summer, I trying to eliminate any excess/luxury gear. I do not think I will bring a pad on this trip (I was planning on it in case I end up in the shelter, but it is cumbersome in the pack) considering there should be ample hanging options?

Thanks. I remember seeing a lot of stealth sites along the way.
