I have a mix of Ti shepard hooks, generic Y stakes from Academy Sports, and gutter spikes. I swap up depending on conditions.

I've found MSR Groundhogs to be the most dependable in the most conditions.
Here in Florida where the soil is loose and sandy, the 9" aluminum nails do nicely.

The best stakes are by far these http://hammockforumsstore.webs.com/a...s/show/1664470 simply because they are hammock stakes, not tent stakes.

Gutter spikes for me. You really can't beat the weight for the price. I've never had one come loose on me yet.

I went with these, because they are an exact replica of a ground hog, but cheaper.

I don't have a lot of experience with a variety of stakes. Cheap stakes that come with cheap tents or hang in the outdoor section of the department store. They bend or break, and I buy them again until I saw the Groundhog repeatedly praised here. Now I travel with a half dozen, and have the spares pull double duty as toggles in my suspension. No complaints so far.
