    Hey from the Mother Lode

I'm approaching an age where I've spent most of my life in a hammock... or at least feel like I have. My first hammock was a military jungle hammock from the Army-Navy store in Walnut Creek, CA. It had no spreader bar, just enough room for a sleeping bag, mosquito netting sides with an integrated rain fly the sides of which could be let down to just cover the mosquito net making for a toasty night's sleep. I used to sleep outside during the summer and I remember enjoying a rare midnight rain storm when my mom came running out to see if I was ok and if I needed to come in. I told her "no way!" I was dry as a bone and having a great time!

Nowadays my rig is a double wide woven rope job with a very thick quilt from Goodwill to keep the bottom side warm and thwart the skeeters, covered by a "mombasa" style black* mosquito net all tucked in and fastened with various clips, topped off with a 12x16' tarp from Costco on a rope parallel to the hammock but about 4' above the hooks. Two pieces of conduit are attached by zip ties to the edges of the tarp with two more pieces of conduit for support poles to adjust the sun/shade/rain exposure. I still spend many nights out there now that I'm 61.

I also spend many hours with my laptop and a wireless connection. I love to spend time out there when it's inclement weather and I'm all bundled up "head and ear" as my granpa used to say with a nice warm pup dog on my lap.

*Black, I have discovered, is the best color for seeing out through the mosquito netting. Some of the synthetics have shinier thread which glistens and interferes almost as much as white netting.
