    Whoopie vs RapRing

So I know that the whoopie slings are lighter, but how do they compare to the speed of the rapring (d ring) setup? To me, it seems that the d-ring on the hammock would give you instant ridge-line as well as a fast setup for suspension.

Am I missing something here? I know the rings have a bit more heft, but I really need to see what's so amazing about whoopies. I have been itching to make something and both seem to be great options.

Not sure why either one would give you an instant ridge line. They are close enough in speed that it only counts in racing.

I'm not sure I understand what you are referring to with regards to how D rings make an instant ridgeline?
I assume you are referring to descender rings used as cinch buckles? I use them and they a little faster and easier that whoopies. Its just the extra weight and bulk of that system is not for the weight conscious backpacker. For car camping or day trips I like using the descender rings. There isalso something reaaly cool about hanging from something so thin as a whoopie sling. The constriction principle behind them is also cool.

It seems that with d-rings on the hammock, I can create a ridge-line using the rings just like I would for the suspension. I guess "instant" is the wrong way to put it, maybe faster is the better term (sorry for confusion).

I guess, I just want to hear the pros/cons of each system. Again, I have money that is dieing to be turned into gear and some hands that are itching to make something.

Bubba, you nailed it with your assumption!

It depends... ;-) With whoopies you use a tree strap and then hitch the whoopee to the strap. the other end of the whoopee is either larks head or or some other fastening method to the hammock. You can run a ridge line to that point. With straps you can avoid the tree hugger with a long strap and with a Dutch Clip, or carabiner to clip through put the rings at the hammock and never untie the hitch. Just slack or tighten as needed then put in a slippery half hitch as insurance. Neither give you an ideal tarp tie in at the hammock end. Both give you a tie in at the tree where the strap is closed into a loop.

I don't think weight is really an issue. My 2 biners and 4 D rings weigh almost nothing.

Yea I have a continues Amsteel loop with a D-ring inserted into it on both ends of my hammock that I tie the ridge line and whoppies to and it doesn't wight anything as far as I'm concerned, maybe .6/.7 grams at best (not a gram weenie).

after looking into it, I think I am going to go w/ the whoopies and non-stitched webbing. I can always test out the RapRings later on.

    Thanks for the help all!
