    DIY Silnylon Tarp

I am looking to make my own silnylon tarp.

I do not have sewing machine so I was looking to do something that is 9X6. The width will allow me to not have to sew two pieces together.

Do you think this is large enough for an asym config? I want a light tarp for backpacking. Thanks!

If you don't want/don't have the means to sew, and you want to keep it cheap I'd recommend checking constructions sites and seeing if you can purchase a 9x9 or 10x10 section of tyvek. Lightweight, decent coverage, and much better than trying to stay under a too small tarp.

Not that I am any kind of expert, but my concern would be running the risk of tearing the tarp where you attach the tie out lines.

If you dont sew, save yourself the hassle and buy one.

Tarps are usually sew together. Tie outs for guylines and suspension would be a real problem if not sew on.

I can sew. I just don't have a machine. I am going to hand sew a small hem and sew on the tabs myself. I'll let you guys know how it comes out. I gives me a nice project that I can do when I am not doing school stuff. Plus, it sounds kind of relaxing to work on.

I just picked up a 9'x6' Sil 2nd. Not too much invested in the project. If its too small for me to use when all's said and done, it'll still make a decent emergency tarp for day hiking.

Where did you find 6' wide sil?
My knife is so sharp it cut the sixth finger off my right hand! On the plus side, Inigo Montoya no longer hunts me.

OMG. I am an idiot. I bought a 5x9 piece. Forget this. Where can I get a tarp 50 or less shipped?

EDIT: Guess I can make an 8x5 Tarp, could be good for something. I was really excited about doing something DIY. Modding my ENO with whoopie slings didn't cut it! I suppose the an 8x5 is pretty close to the HH asym.

You can still use that size of material for a wood shelter or small communal shelter. I've a couple of small tarps for such an occasion.

or make 2 8x5 and over lap them at the center, like roofing tiles? a lot of flexibility for not too much more weight.

I am still debating how I want to do my tie outs. Also, does anyone know where you can buy shock cord by the length at a store? Gander Mountain was a no go. They only those "mini bungees" which I debated mutilating but decided that might not work out too well.
