    "Warbird" or "Jerry5" sewing question

I am getting ready to build a "Warbird" and have build a 2' version just to make sure I got things right before I went all in. I was just wondering what people are doing to connect the foot box / Shelf piece as well as the zipper side extra piece to the main body? Are you roll hemming the sides of both pieces and then just sewing them on top of each other? or are you rolling both pieces together?

Thanks in advance for the advice.

On mine, I like the flat felled seam, but it is more for the nice look than the strength. You could also sew the rolled hems together as you mentioned or even sew the pieces together and cover with binding tape or grossgrain. Any will work fine.

On the zipper side, the extra piece is sewed to the netting. It's the zipper that's sewn to the main body.

Thanks for the quick reply Jerry...on your flat felled seams...do you iron the ripstop? I keep reading up on it and that is what they all say...cant imagine the end results of ironed ripstop being good.

Occasionally I will iron some seams before sewing, maybe on a tarp. Usually only if it's really long and I want it to be very straight. It can help you get a nice, straight seam. Just make sure to use a very low temperature setting(I think #2 on my iron).

For a hammock I don't really see a need for ironing, though.

one on top of the other, sew together and finish with grosgrain if your looking for strength. Looks good too.

This is how the seems are done on my "warbird" as well. Very strong and easy to do. I didn't even roll the raw edges first before joining them.

To be more specific. Sew together 1/4" from edge. Fold 1" grosgrain over the edge and sew.
