You will want to get a large, even if you don't think you'll need it. The regular is short; somewhere in between a throw and a blanket. I don't know about the large, but it'll be bigger, and that can't hurt.
I would recommend it for a summertime top quilt if you know that you will not get temps any lower than mid 50s (maybe even HIGH 50s or low 60s - here in The Bluegrass, we won't see anything colder than the high 50s for a couple of months still. Our lows this coming week are 66-70, so YMMV. If you are in the mountains, or in a generally cooler climate than the southeast US, this may not be for you). Below that, you may as well just have a sheet on. It also doesn't have the best warmth:weight ratio out there. For instance, you can get a 3 season quilt that weighs less and has better coverage.
