    Thermarest Tech Blanket

Has anyone gotten one of these before?
    http://www.thermarest.com/product_de...?pID=124&cID=4

Couldn't find much info on the insulation or rating, but size-wise looks liked it'd easily convert to a warm weather underquilt. 48x76in, 21 oz. and looks like it has drawstring channels already. They are designed to snap onto a thermarest via fitted sheet.

Certainly looks interesting. The regular size is not terribly heavy @ 1lb 5oz.

Any opinions, experience in using the Tech Blanket as a warm & humid weather sleeping pad. Wondering if having this layer between you and the hammock might reduce any clammy wet feeling. Figured it should prevent any mosquito bite through. Would this blanket compressed between your hammock and your bag provide much warmth insulation under cooler conditions? If so, how cool ?

Checked with the ThermaRest people. No data on R rating. Packs to 8x10x4 inches.

I was looking at this to convert into an underquilt for my HH-style homemade hammock. Seems like it would be cheaper and less work than making my own, and easier for someone who kinda sucks at sewing.

I saw something called "Warm Windows" when I was at JoAnn Fabrics yesterday. It's basically an insulated sandwich of material for using as blinds that has some kind of waterproof coating on the outside material, 60 inches long that you can buy by the yard at $20 -$26/yd. It is similar if not identical to this: http://www.cozycurtains.com/warm_window_system.html

This is a very viable option for someone who can't sew, and it's pretty cheap. I don't know about the weight, but it would definitely provide insulation.

I was just looking at another thread where you posted about that Warm Windows stuff, and that reminded me about this thread.

I'm really looking for something to make a 40-50+ degree underquilt.. think a single layer of that stuff with a silnylon outside?

That's what I was thinking. The stuff at JoAnn's is 50% off right now, so it would only cost about $15-20 for enough to make a quilt if you used the 60" wide roll. I think this could go well below 40 degrees for the right person, with the insulation that they use in it.

Yeah.... looks like I'm gonna have to make another stop at JoAnnes.

Their ripstop nylon is usually 1.9oz, right? How can I tell, never having experienced 1.1 or 1.9?

If you can see both at the same time or have a piece to compare it to, it's easy. You can kinda see through the 1.1 a lot easier than the 1.9.

If you don't have both, the only way is to weigh a known quantity.

How to Calculate Strength of Ripstop Nylon

Total Weight in Ounces x 36
    /
Length in Yards x Width in Inches
    =
    Weight [ounces per square yard]

I use a Tech Blanket as a quilt in the summer (actually, I take it along in the event that I might feel a slight chill in the hot, thick Kentucky air). It works great, but could certainly be lighter. For what it does, provide decent insulation down into the ~mid 50s, there is no reason that it can't be less than a pound.
