So I recently finished my very first DIY "Switch-Bird" hybrid hammock (details of which can be found here). Little did I realize the far-reaching impact my weekend of craftiness would have...
My boyfriend has always been anti-hammock. I've brought up the idea of getting a camping hammock a number of times, citing it's portability, comfort, and ability to camp on almost any terrain. Every time I heard the same responses: "Hammocks are so uncomfortable!" "Hammocks are so bulky!" "Hammocks are only summer/fall gear!" (The SO has always been a Bivvy Sack kind of guy) But I stayed firm!
Earlier this month the boy embarked on a two week section hike of the AT with his buddies. While he was gone (desperately wishing I could join them instead of working) I seized the opportunity to make the hammock - without telling him, of course! I figured - Hey, it's a one person hammock, he'll never have to sleep in it...
Fast forward to last week. Not 24 hours after I finished the hammock, the boy returns from the hike.
Boy: "It was SO HOT. Sleeping on the ground was the worst!" *pause* "So I think I'll get a hammock."
Me: "ORLY? Wellllll.... I just so happen to have a hammock right here!"
[Insert discussion of "You made that?!!" "Well, I want a lightweight hammock... Hey this is really light!" "But I want an asym hammock, to lay flat.... Wait, this is asym?!" etc.]
Boy: *long pause* "So... can I borrow it?"
Yes folks! Barely a full day after making MY hammock, the thieving boyfriend stole and slept in it before I did! To be fair, he does have better trees in his yard. He praised it's breeziness in the heat, and said it was comfortable on both his back and stomach (didn't sleep on his side).
Now he's ordered his own HH Asym Expedition. We'll have to compare the two and see who's is better. *cough-mine-cough* But we'll all know whose persistence, thorough research, and superior craftiness, with the help of an extreme hot spell, won over the doubting boy.
And they all lived happily ever after. The end.
