    leighlo tq

    hey folks
i havn't seen a whole lot of info about leigh's top quilt so i thought i'd post a couple of pics.
i just recieved this yesterday and have to say that i could'nt be happier with the speedy service and great workmanship, this quilt is 84" long and 48"wide at the head and tapers to 40" at the feet. the foot box is formed with a bungee and a button and is more than adaquate for my size ten feet, another really neat feature of this quilt is the draw cord at the top end which allows you to cinch the quilt up at your shoulders creating a very snug fit for cold nights, the climashield on the outer edges does not appear to add much weight, but i suspect it will be worth the extra ounce or so on cold nights when the down would normally be compressed in those areas,
i don't have a way to wiegh it ,but it does not appear to way much more than my jrb hudson river, (another sweet piece of gear)..
can't wait to give it a test run in the ansel adams wilderness in sept, i will give you folks a report after that .

Wow that is sharp, I really like the colors!!!
My knife is so sharp it cut the sixth finger off my right hand! On the plus side, Inigo Montoya no longer hunts me.

Dale Gribble: I'm thinking, "new hammock." For me, laying and swaying in a hammock is like a steady morphine drip without the risk of renal failure.

Randy : yea but just remember yer roots and where ya come from....you got Hennessy in yer blood son......

so is the climashield sides banking on the non-compactability of the synthetic insulation to not "crush" as much as the down would when it gets pinned in b/t the user and the hammock? i can't really see how this would work in RL applications.

i don't see why she just didn't use down...

This is from a user review on her site, so I guess so.

"Leigh’s new TQ is a hybrid made from climashield and down. The middle section of the TQ is a karo baffle design that worked out very well. The sides are 2 layers of 3.3 combat climashield. The climashield is in the areas of the quilt that are being compressed by the body and where down normally has problems with loft. It insulates better when compressed than down. I could feel it working better than my all down quilt. The design also helps control the down and keeps it over the top of your body.

    Why not just down?

It is a well documented phenomenon that synthetic hammock top quilts (or sleeping bags) retain more insulation on the areas where the occupants weight compresses the quilt than the down quilts do. I don't see why you would have doubts about this in RL applications, but I am interested in your perspective. It seems that LeighLo is using this information to produce a well thought out hybrid quilt. And as Hang"n"out mentions in the video on the website, there are a lot of people already making good down TQs, they wanted to have a unique product offering.

Check out those videos on the website, and hopefully there will be some updates to the site to make the crucial information more accessible. Cheers.
