Built this a couple months ago and finally getting around to posting it. I started out with a DIY rabbit ear style stand which worked OK but was a bit wobbly due to my less than stellar job at drilling the holes the right size.So I decided to have another go and build a rock-solid stand that wouldn't sway or flex when used. (Inspired somewhat by Risk's stand.) Below are the results.
Materials used:
- 9 8ft pressure treaded 2x4s
- 2 12ft pressure treated 2x4s
- 8 bolts 5 1/2-6 inches long 3/8inch
- Deck Screws
Cost: $50 (less if you're hardware store's standard treated 2x4s aren't crap & you don't have to go "premium". Also if you've already got the bolts or opt for all screws)
Time: ~4hrs
Construction:
Uprights - They're just a pair of 8ft 2x4s. One of these days I'll cut off the excess at which point they'll be 76 inches tall. The feet are 6ft long with the uprights screwed in at the middle. (The remaining 2ft of each foot was cut into 1ft sections and used as the spacers.)
Braces - The side braces are ~50in long. The brace going to the lower crossbar is ~51in long and have attachment points about 3ft out & 3ft up.
You can get the hammock swinging pretty good and this thing doesn't move.
Crossbars - Simply uncut 12ft 2x4s. I am considering cutting out the center part of the lower bar and just putting small feet under where the brace connects - less risk of landing on it if suspension fails.
