    I like the idea of the loop. For example, I could put a bulky biner in the marlin spike or leave other hardware (e.g., "elephant trunks") and not worry about it jamming in the smallish loop. Also, I've had straps fail for wear or a nick on the edges, just like you mentioned.

    RE:fusing. When I use a marlin spike or other knots under a lot of pressure the material begins to distort and/or get stuck to itself. The forces seem to act like a slow heat on the material. Just worried about the strap degrading over time when it is under a lot of load.
