Planning a trip in or around Mt. Mitchell State Park, NC?

    From our local radio station:

    Campground closes near Mount Mitchell

    08/10/2011

According to a news release from the state park, due to recent bear activity, the U.S. Forest Service has closed the Commissary Ridge Campground until further notice, All Forest Service trails leading to the Commissary Ridge Campground are also closed. Also, Mount Mitchell State Park has closed the Mount Mitchell trail and the Commissary trail beyond the Camp Alice intersection until further notice. Forest Service rangers have reported that Black bears have been active in and around the park, and sometimes aggressive at the Commissary Ridge area.

When they say "Commissary Ridge Campground" I guess they are talking about the area often used by backpackers on Commissary Ridge, where the old shelter used to be.
I don't think the park campground is called by that name.

I have a friend that has a trip planned in the Black Mountain Campground at the lower end of that trail in mid Sept. I'll tell him to be aware & check on the latest as that time approaches. Thanks.

From the NC State Parks website:

    "Black Bear Awareness/Trail Closures

Due to recent bear activity the USFS has closed the Commissary Ridge Campground until further notice. All USFS trails leading to the Commissary Ridge Campground are also closed. The USFS has also closed the Deep Gap Campground. Mount Mitchell State Park has closed the MT Mitchell trail and the Commissary trail beyond the Camp Alice intersection until further notice. The Deep Gap Trail beyond Mt. Craig is also closed.
    "

This is new info about additional closures at Deep Gap.

P.S. Slowhike, you're right. They are referring to back country campsites, not campgrounds.

Thanks for the update. Briarbottom Campground is were my friend has a group site reserved Sept 15-19. I'll pass this along.
I wondered if it wouldn't be a pretty good possibility that those bears might follow the trail that leads right down into the big campsites a few thousand feet down the mountainside. Not that far for them.
