Newbie looking for advice

Hi All, I just found this forum a few days ago and have found it very helpful. I have watched a lot of videos and looked at a lot of pictures.

You guys really know how to make cool gear!

I'm about to attempt to make my own hammock. I have most of the material and have a sewing machine.
What I need is a bit of advice to begin with.

I'm 6'4" - How long about should my hammock be?
from end to end including enough material to allow for hemming.

I've read about the shoulder sqeeze, so I'm trying to avoid it.

Welcome to HF from Mass. I haven't made my own hammock yet, so I don't have any advice...however...many HF members have. This is the place to get all of your hammock questions answered! Welcome!

if you can, go to an outdoor shop (not sure who in ireland...) and see if anyone carries an ENO brand. most places can set it up for you and you can butt test it. with your height, a doublenest size ENO would be the better choice and you can take dimensions off that.

other than that, check out the DIY section of this forum, you should find some hints there or maybe can reask that question and get some good results.

Welcome to the forum from west Texas.

I'm sure others who are more knowledgable on the subject than me will chime in on this for you, but I seem to recall reading somewhere that you want your hammock to be about four feet longer than you are tall.

I can't tell you exactly where I read that or if it even correct, but it may give you a starting point.

Welcome from the 'States. There is a ton of useful information here so dig in and read up. Regarding the length of the hammock, it seems to come down to personal preference and for me at 6'2", that means an 11' hammock (raw, take about an inch or two away for hems). That length gets me a flat lay with no squeeze. Good luck and post pics when you're done.

I had seen Knotty's video and am planning to use it as a template.
