    Sewing Machine?

I found what seems like a good deal on CL, but wanted to see if anyone was familiar with this. It's a Kenmore Model 1345. It's beginner'ish with 8 stitch selections, but it's all metal, they are the original owners, and it's only been used 3-4 times ever. They're asking $60.

    Any thoughts?

    Thanks,
    Rick

Actually, it looks like you have two stitch options, straight and zigzag. You have 7 variations of zigzag to choose from. That's okay, you will probably find that you only need those two stitches. All metal is a big plus in my book. It's more stoutly made then the newer ones. Only 60$ and barely used, sounds like a great deal to me. Pick up some 3in1 oil and give it a good cleaning and oiling. It hasn't even been broken in.

NO NO NO NO 3 in 1 oil is death to sewing machines. NEVER use it. What you want is a very light grade machine oil. Buy it from a sewing center. 3 in 1 is a mixture of different lubricants that can leave deposits on the critical moving parts of a sewing machine. It has its place, don't get me wrong. But NOT in a sewing machine.

Thanks Rev. I've gotta wonder why it was recommended to me at the sewing machine repair place though. Setting themselves up for future business?

I don't plan on it now. I was floored when they quoted me 175$ to service my machine. I know I blinked at her several times before I said thanks but no thanks. That's when she showed what to oil and suggested 3in1.

Is it really that difficult/time consuming to work on these machines?. I have a late 60's Singer and a early 70's New Home. I'm not talking antiques here.

Thanks for the feedback. Rev, I've been doing my homework and checked out all of your posts in your sig. Very helpful. I also just called my mom, who has been a professional seamstress for most of her life, and she told me some things to look for when I check it out tomorrow.

I was hoping someone on here had first-hand info on how this machine would be for gear-making. If she wasn't 7 hours away from me, I'd take her with me.
