    Help! busted my suspension rope...

So, I was playing around with a garda hitch setup on my ultralight backpacker... and busted the suspension on one side, the hitch rings wore right through the sheath on one of the sides, exposing the weight bearing strands underneath.

I need help either fixing this or changing the suspension, and need to know what my options are... I'm looking for ease of set up, and lightness second. I'm not worried about a 4 ounce difference if It means i can set up the hammock 5-10 minutes quicker, and take it down without hassles.

I currently know about (but not anything deeper than they exist):
Whoopie suspension --no idea how these actually work...
    webbing
more cabling so I can tie a knot/hitch/whatever

I need something that'll take the normal pull of the HH, as I'm most certainly not using a 30* angle from the tree, something much closer to 15*.

    Hey graelb,

Now would be a great time to switch to whoopie slings from any of the vendors here on the forum. I got mine from whoopieslings.com here on hammock forums. It was an easy switch over. I use the same hammock you have. Hope this helps you.
    Take care,

I JUST finished ordering the 6' slings from them. I'm hoping it gives me enough options. How do you connect them to the trees?

+1 on this. Owl and I both swapped to woopie+biner suspension system and is better weight wise and tension forces i think are greater than the stock rope. I am still a noob so I do not knwo all the math on the stock rope, but woopies have a tensal strength of about 1100lbs. When choosing biners make sure they are climbing grade biners, with at least 15kN for the force gauge on the longitudal axis.

Sorry to hear about your accident and i wish you better luck later on.

I don't think anybody's at 15 degrees once the hammock as loaded.

If you don't find, easily, what you want here, go to the forum on suspensions and look at Stickies, or find Youtubes by Shug or Professor Hammock / GrizzlyAdams

Per previous poster, a vendor experienced with Hennessy can deliver to you just what you want and need.

Thanks guys for the awesome responses and advice!

My plan is to use my (just now purchased) whoopies connected to a carabiner which is attached to a pair of tree huggers which are girth hitched to the tree... this should be enough distance for I'd think trees ~20-25 feet apart on a bad day... Sound about right?

    Hey graelb,

Opie (original owner of Whoopieslings.com before SmokeBait) posted this video. I used this to switch my suspension and it was so easy.

Definitely agree with the way you're going. As Weasel mentioned, that's the same suspension that he and I tried out this weekened. We've used whoopie slings on previous hangs, but instead of a toggle this time, we used a climbing grade carabiner and just attached the whoopie sling loop to the 'biner.

Fast, no worry about anything slipping, and it worked like a charm for both of us this weekend.

I changed my HH suspension to War bonnet adj webbing, it is not quite as fast as the garda, but close. plus the tree straps are built in the design.
