Cord suitable for whoopie in Europe?

Hi,

All the praises about whoopies made me curious and I am willing to go and try to make a pair or two for myself (I noticed last week that I could use a lighter pack… )

I read a bunch of posts, and while the making process seems quite easy, the sourcing of suitable material here in Switzerland is not. Impossible to find a dealer or an online shop that carry Amsteel-Blue or DynaGlide.

Sure, I could order it in the USA, but I am not much fond of paying more in shipping rate than for the string. Besides, I would then rather order nicely made whoopies at whoopieslings.com

I would try local nautic shop, but I am not quite sure what exactly to ask for either…

As I understand, it is 1.8mm Dyneema "throw line" used by arborists. 40€ for 60m (~.25$/foot).

It is 12 strands Dyneema (380kg for the 2mm / 900kg for the 3mm)
It comes at 1chf/meter (2mm) or 1.40chf/meter (3mm), so ~.40$/foot

Are they good for our use?

based on color, length, and just plain gut feel I believe the Snake-Skin line is identical with DynaGlide - compair with : http://www.amazon.com/England-Orange.../dp/B0044U1ZB0

I have just noticed that I could indeed buy 600ft (!) of 7/64" Amsteel blue on Amazon, with a very decent shipping rate.

I am under the impression that most people here use amsteel; is it easier to make whoopies with it than with dynaglide? or the amsteel is more secure?

You have more options

The equivalents to amsteel 7/64 are;

Marlow D12 2.5mm
English Braids dynamic line 2mm( Smaller than 7/64 at 2mm)
Liros Dpro
Teufulberger and FSE robline make a pure dyneema braid, not sure of name of product

Dynaglide is an arborist throw line from NER made from dyneema braid-there are other brands too.

I find that its cheaper for me to import from the USA at the expense of long deliveries

If you purchased the nominal 7/64" Amsteel Blue or other line with that weight you did the right thing. The mentioned Stein throw line is curiously similar to Dynaglide in having no support for its claimed breaking strength other than one line of advertising copy, and no need for it to be that strong for its stated use.

Count on breaking strengths to be 1700Kg per Kg/100M +- 20%. For example, Marlowe's D12 90 weights .53Kg /100M (= 53 grams per meter). The BS is 1018Kg.

Sizes are nominal. Yale Cordage makes at least two Dyneema / Spectra single braid lines, fabricated differently. While the 5mm nominal sizes both weigh 1.49Kg per 100m, the 4mm Maxibraid is reported to weigh 1.04Kg, but the Ultrex 30% less, at .73Kg. Marlow reports its penultimate strength 4mm Dyneema 90-based line to weigh 1.2Kg per 100m. All of these 4mm lines have the same specific gravity.

Pricing, btw, seems to be proportional to the weight of single braid rope within product lines.

i was also searching for a line, like Amsteel, in Germany. The Name to search for is Dyneema SK75. The 3mm line have 900daN, not as strong as Amsteel but that should be enough.

Thank you all, I'll go shop locally tomorrow and see if I find something suitable for a decent price, or I'll go the tried and proven Amsteel way and start to imagine a way to use 600ft… ;-)

The regulations of this country are ridiculous… it's depressing to see that I can have 180m of 7/64" Amsteel-Blue from across the world via Amazon for 120$, and only 80m of 3mm Liros D-Pro for the same amount of cash in my own country.

You can get Amsteel Blue 2.5mm from DD Hammocks UK by the meter or at nownowoutdoors by 3 meters. Prices per meter are similar £1/m, but DD shipping is included.

The price per meter is basically the double than in the US, but what to do The choice is high price per meter or high shipping costs, so it depends on the quantity / paket size.

Offers for Zing-it that I found on Amazon won't ship to Europe

It would be great to establish a list of US suppliers that ship at reasonable costs to Europe. There are great products at good prices but the shipping spoils it all. Come on guys, haven't you heard about the economic crisis in Europe . And we are talking light weight items

I'm from holland and i recently made my whoopie slings but here in holland we don't have amsteel either so i asked around and ended up buying dyneema it's the same only another name maby u could search dyneema in your country
