    Primaloft Help!

I'm going to start making my UQ/TQ soon and I think I'm going to go with 2 layers of Primaloft. I was wondering if anyone who has experience with Primaloft can give me any pointers on assembly. Would I quilt one layer of insulation to one shell and the other layer to the liner and then assemble, or sandwich both layers of insulation between the shells and then quilt through the whole thing? Thanks.

I used these instructions to make my UQ. After seeing the "quilting" method, my mother informed me that I had made a comforter, not a quilt.

The inner and outer shells and both layers of insulation would be sewn together inside out. Then the whole thing is turned right side out and yarn "quilting" loops are tied to stabilize the insulation (see part 6). Hope this helps.

Place both layers of your shell material on top of the insulation. Your shell material should be facing finished side in. You will want to sandwich what ever cord channels or loops inside the shell. Pin everything together and sew 3 sides (2 long and one short) and then sew 2/3s of the remaining short side. Turn right side out and sew up the remaining 1/3 and then use the yarn quilt loops to stabilize the primaloft material. You will also want to make sure that what ever shell material you use that it is down proof b/c the primaloft fibers can come thu if it is not.

Good luck on the project and post many pictures of the during and completed project.

You could always make a TQ/UQ sleeve then slide insulation inside do some quilting and making sure everything fits nicely. Then sew up the last side and your done. Very similar to making a down bag without the baffles.

if you can get some Climashield i would use that... Primaloft is not the best synth insulation for UQ's due to the way it's made.. it can pull apart easy so it needs to be quilted.. even then it still can pull apart so it needs care ..packing and unpacking will make it break down faster... it can be used but you would be better off with 5oz Climashield for 3 season JMO
It puts the Underquilt on it's hammock ... It does this whenever it gets cold

Go with chickenwing's method. Tried and true - it works like a charm!

If I were to stitch the primaloft directly to the shell lengthwise it would compress the insulation where it was stitched. If I were to stitch a lenth of 1" insulation in with this stitch, would that sufficiently fill the void in insulation caused by sewing it to the shell. I'd like to avoid the quilting loops if I can and go for a more commercially made looking quilt. Another idea I had was to run stitches lengthwise to give the appearance of baffles and make the quilt loops internally through the stitching on the inside. Any opinions?

I think it would still compress the insulation reducing its effectiveness.
