    thank you guys.
daffodil flats is there in that rugged wilderness area because of one of the few that actually chose to build a home & raise a family there (in the late 1800s).
here is a link to a historical documentation that tells about two brothers going into the linville gorge w/ the intent of homesteading. only one chooses to stay on after going through the 1st winter.

to get right to the part that's mentioned above, go about 1/4 of the way down the document to this paragraph...

"At his father’s death, Thomas Samuel and his brother Robert were named executors of his will. He left everything to his children, (share and share alike). Thomas and Robert decided to explore the valley their father left them at the foot of Shortoff mountain, some twelve miles to the north of Quaker Meadows. After climbing to the top of Shortoff Mountain, they looked down on a beautiful uninhabited valley with a river winding its way around the foot of the mountain."

My network is really hit and mess right now, so I'm a little behind. But this has to be the only online forum that I know about that is self policing and doesn't get into a lot of time and energy wasting stuff. Like was said, it says something for the small percentage of the people out there that are hikers, than the even smaller precentage of them that are hammockers or hammockers to be.
Is that too much to ask? Girls with frikkin' lasers on their heads?

Hmm... self aware at Daffodil flats? Great pictures Tim, looks like a fun trip. Also, sorry to hear about your Mom's difficulties. Hang in there.
