    Porcupine Mountains - Mi

I was wondering if anyone has done the lake superior section of the trail between LOC's and Big Carp River Trail? I was thinking about adding this portion of the trail to my trip and was wondering how the 2 campsites at lone rock and the one just east of that are for hammocks. any feedback is appreciated.

    thanks,

    patrick

Can't help you with that area, I did the lake shore trail two yrs ago. I dont think you'll want for trees anywhere in the park. But if you go all the way up there don't miss presque isle, beautiful area over there.
    Good luck,

Wife and I will be doing a loop at the Porkies starting 8/24-8/27 if anyone is up there. I think we're starting at loc's walking down the road or hitching to pick up the lake superior trail to big carp to connection to mirror lake and then back up to loc's.

Anyone know what section on the lake superior trail they are having problems with the black bears trying to wear backpacks?

Anyone going to be up there next week between 24-28? Looking to possibly do a point to point and shuttling. I know you can use the services up there but I'm not interested using them.

I've been there but I was not into hammocks at the time, sorry I can't tell you if the sites are good for hanging a hammock I'll ask my buddy if he remembers.

Trust me when I say there is no shortage of trees to hang from. I've done two backpacking trips in the porkies. The first one started at LOC overlook. Took Big Carp RT to Little Carp RT to Government Peak Trail to Lost Lake Trail to Escarpment Trail back to the car.

The second with my son we parked by the Overlook Trail. We took the Escarpment to Mirror Lake Trail to Government Peak and back on Lost Lake Trail.

It's real pretty on the Big Carp. Lots of big trees with less undergrowth. By the Little Carp there is a campsite nick named "The Hilton". Lake rocks that are long and flat have been set up like couches around the fire pit. A nice pad to sit on and it doesn't get any better unless you are in your hammock . This was the first place I ever hung on a backpacking trip. Set up ten feet from Superior shore and fell asleep listening to the waves washing ashore .
There is another campsite that was very private. Southwest on the trail by Government Peak is a campsite. On the map it shows marshes. There is a nice creek going through for water and at night you can walk out to the opening for good star gazing.
If you make it by Trap Falls the trail looks like it crosses the river. The trail does not really cross, but if you go across the river and turn right there is a beautiful place to hang by the falls. The Eastern end of the park from Government Peak on is a lot more dense. We were moving at a good speed because of the gnats.
I didn't take any pictures on the first trip, but I do have some from the second.
First is overlooking LOC from the Escarpment.
Second is our campsite by Mirror Lake.
Third is LOC at the bottom.
Forth is the Marsh area by Government Peak.
The rest are the campsite by Trap falls.
    Have fun!

I didn't do that trail, but was told you can't really see the lake because of all the trees. Once you get to the campsites it will be more open. I do plan on snowshoeing this trail come January

Thanks Oms,...I've been many times and have some favorites but i've never done the section between buck shot and big carp 6 cabin. i called up there and that was the section they were having bear problems with but it was explained to me people were leaving their campsites a little messy.
