    Question Sil-Poly for tarp?

I saw some fabric that was bright blue at wal the other day, and I am pretty sure it is Sil Poly because it had a waxy texture to it. I remember reading someone describing sil poly this way when reading about different fabrics here, and that is how they described it...

Can I use this stuff for a tarp?

As long as it's waterproof, it should work fine.

    Sil poly vs. silny?

[QUOTE=Narwhalin;54747]I saw some fabric that was bright blue at wal the other day, and I am pretty sure it is Sil Poly because it had a waxy texture to it. I remember reading someone describing sil poly this way when reading about different fabrics here, and that is how they described it...

What is the difference between "Sil poly" and "silicone-impregnated nylon, aka silny"?

Also, it seems that I read that we should use nylon, not polyester for hiking gear....Is this because polyester stretches too much?

no, nylon stretches too much, we should use polyester for hiking gear .

i love my polyester hammock, and i suspect poly would make a tighter tarp with less fuss, less need for tarp tensioners. i just can't afford to buy spinntex right now.

I also found some bright blue "waxy" fabric at my local wal-mart. Mine had a ripstop grid on it though. Did yours have this? This fabric only let water through when I put a large puddle in the middle of a piece of the fabric over a bowl. In a rain it works awesome as a tarp.

the feel of it has to do with the coating on it i believe more than the material it's made of. polyester is generally softer and silkier than nylon.

you can get spinntex from www.thru-hiker.com

    Yes! That's it...

I did the same test, and after 4 1/2 hrs., no water leaked through! I am stoked about this stuff...it is very thin and lightweight...
