Yes, many DIY underquilts have been done: with synthetic, down, and a variety of other exotic/fun insulators.

Check out the "Forums" link at the top of the page, and look for "Bottom Insulation". A couple quick searches will get you there too. Try "DIY UQ"...

    Be nice LR....

Here's a link to the DIY forum DCS... You'll find lots of ideas and plans there, in particular in the 'sticky' threads at the top.

You should be able to re-use the down from your comforter without issue. But, it will be heavier and bulkier than some of the high-fill power down sources you'll see on the forum often. That's fine if you car-camp, canoe, etc. Mostly the higher fill power down is used for those who backpack, etc.

Be sure to check out the ARTICLES forum too, articles usually have how-to instructions.

sometimes a cheap popular option is turning an old rectangle sleeping bag into an UQ
Dale Gribble: I'm thinking, "new hammock." For me, laying and swaying in a hammock is like a steady morphine drip without the risk of renal failure.

I did this exact thing. It took me 3 evenings to do. It was really simple. I followed the Red River Gorge article in the DIY section.
    I took this
    and turned it into this

Quilt looks nice, whats the weight of it now?

I like the look of your quilt. Whats the weight of it. I think it is a excellent option for someone like myself that has to watch the budget. Did you just cut it down or did you switch to a lighter weight fabric also. About how much insulation did you not use with the cutdown.
