Just a quicky ....off track day walk, taking in Monserrat lookout, taking in the Upper Portals & returning via Yamahra creek.
Initially planned a overnighter but had to change my plans.....

    Start of the track in...

Graces hut with cattle yards in foreground. Owned by a local hiking club

Quite a bit of burn off in the area, which made locating the un-marked track a whole lot easier to find.

    Old growth

The views of Mt Barny from Monserrat Lookout, took my breath away.

    Trailside flora

Upper Portals just before the heavens opened

Rogue traveller, the cane toad, an ecological nightmare introduced here to limit damage to sugar cane crops, due to beetles. You can see the large poison sacks just behind the head.

Sheltering from the rain & time for a well earned snack break....

    Distant showers...ends a great day

Oh & don't forget to check youself for bush ticks on the way out......

+1 on the beautiful shots. I really liked the look and design of that cabin and privy. Glad you had such a great day and that you shared it with the rest of us.

So how does the toad poison work? As a deterrent, or as a weapon? Great pics. Thanks for posting the report!

    NCPatric...both,
It can eject a fine spray a short distance, but mainly any predator that eats the toad gets a dose of venom through its mucous membrane & usually dies within 15mins
Native animals like goanna's, birds, snakes to household pets....even in humans it causes intense pain, temporary blindness & inflammation.

Just one nasty experiment gone wrong.

I will never look at my local toads the same way again.

    Thanks.
