    Double-sided headbox/footbox?

I'm curious if anyone has tried putting a headbox and footbox triangle on both sides of a gathered hammock. I'm not even entirely sure the concept is sound, but if so, it seems you would have lots of room for a nice flat lie either way. It may not even be worthwhile, as you can get a decent flat lie on a regular gathered hammock just by going diagonal, but...has it been done?

    Interesting question!!
On my next hammock I am planning to leave the sides loose by NOT shortening them up in the gather, as is common. Instead, I am going to build small footboxes on each side of the hammock to take up the edge slack. (Both on the foot end only).

If it doesn't work, I have a seam riper

Unfortunately, that is a cuple of projects down the list.

I don't think the foot-box idea, as you describe it will work. As a matter of fact I'm pretty certain it won't because I've been pondering this puzzle for a couple of years...

Early this year I finally hit on a concept that I was convinced would work. I did the math to get all the right angles and made a model, which was good enough to prove my design would work. This spring I bit the bullet and made the real deal. It worked out splendidly, I can lay in this hammock literally any way that I want, just as if there was not netting attached.

I inserted a couple pictures but they aren't showing up so here are links instead.

    look at this: http://www.wildernesslogics.com/Night-Owl-Night-Owl.htm

Grosgrain channels with shock cord and a cord lock. I tried it, and love it. you can have a foot box, head box, dog box, or whatever box and it can be adjusted out for lounging and whatnot...I'm liking it so much it will be a standard feature on my DIY hammocks from now on.

The problem with a footbox on both sides of a hammock is that you risk tearing the hammock when you get in and out. The footbox shortens the side of the hammock so sitting on the side puts a lot of strain on the fabric and stitching.

One option would be to use my stretch side hammock mod for the foot and head box.
