i have no complaints with my double layer/double width hammock. sleeps good and it's durable. i made it. i've always placed a blue pad between the layers for insulation and never goten cold. this trip i'm going to insert a thin micro fiber blanket between the hammock layers. thinking the blanket will use less space on the bike than the foam pad. anyone done this before and did it work?
being as the blanket is not rigid like a pad, I wonder if it may bunch up if not tied out somehow. It should work similar to an UQ, but not quite at effective as there's no air gap to warm up. Still, it should work. Post a report after you test this out.
and they work reasonably well. No condensation problems, but as already mentioned they can be a bit of a pain to keep flat. I am now using a 1/8" minicel pad which seems to maintain shape well. I just received a 1/4" torso pad from JRB but have yet to sleep with it.

Most of us end up poorer here but richer for being here. Olddog, Fulltime hammocker, 365 nights a year.
Insulation = thickness and thermal transfer properties. For summer use, it may be just fine, but if it is thinner and lets air pass, it can't be as warm-- just plain physics. It will breath better. That blanket plus a space blanket might make a nice summer combo. The AMK space blankets are much quieter and worth the extra cost.

Dale, you're not helping me here. I wasn't going to spend any more money on gear.
My experience trying to do so with fleece was that it slipped and bunched up real bad and there was no perceived insulating properties due to its compression between the hammock layers. It worked better suspended as an underquilt, although fleece along didn't work in windy conditions. I switched to a poncho liner UQ and it works much better.
You'll find me hanging somewhere in the sunshine state.
I should have a package waiting for me when I get home. I'm eager to check the fleece out. I have a double and plan on just placing it in between the layers first to see how well it insulates. The mylar should be a good wind break and the fleece should keep me from feeling clammy.
