    First Tarp Modification Ideas

My tarp is an ENO Profly. It was a gift, and I am grateful for it because I would not have a tarp without it. It measures 10'6" by 6'4" and has (what I have discovered from this forum are) cat cuts.

It has kept me dry in some pretty good downpours. I just tuck up under the ridge real close, and I have gotten lucky with some straight down rains.

After oogling all of the fancy tarps around, I have come to the realization that I probably do not have quite enough coverage, and at some point I am going to get wet.

I have spent quite awhile searching this forum for already manufactured tarp modifications, but all that I have found are about cutting things down, or adding more loops for tie outs. I am sorry if I am repeating a question, and if so could someone please point me to the proper thread?

Eventually, once I am out of grad school and have a bit more weight to my wallet, I will upgrade and probably make myself a new tarp. In the meantime, I would like to try and modify the one that I have. I have a few questions for the experts first though.

Can I really just buy some nylon, figure out a good shape, and add a bit on? Or is this a ridiculous idea?

Are there any problems that as a noobie I am probably overlooking?
I know that it will add weight, but that is okay.

I would appreciate any suggestions. Thank you!

Thank you MAD777! This looks like a good solution.

I am still wondering if I can just sew right onto the tarp I have so that it is all one piece. Unless that is a bad idea...?

There's nothing wrong with sewing a beak on your tarp. Just seam seal where you stitch. But you may like the flexibility that comes from having a removable beak. If you do sew them on, you can stow the doors by folding them back and tying them together with shock cord.

    Thank you slowhike!

Thank you shumway. It just seemed too simple, so I thought I should probably check in with the experts. I will seam seal.

Good! Will start looking for material, and then on to the drawing board!

I am sure that someone has done this, probably even with this tarp...?

I have modified rectangular tarps which hang on the diagonal by adding triangular pieces to all four sides, like this.
From this angle you can only see one of the sides, but the two colors makes it a bit easier to understand. The blue is the basic rectangle, hung diagonally, so you see half of it here. The orange is one of the four triangles attached to the sides of the blue rectangle. The edges of the adjacent triangles meet to form a beak at each end. I used velcro on the vertical edges so I could open the tarp up in nice weather. It's a bit tricky coming up with dimensions that give plumb seams at the ends. I made mine angle in a bit so I could hold the end taut just by weighting it down (water bottle in pocket inside the lower left corner of the orange panel, just barely visible in this picture). The orange things on the ground are supplemental anchors (rock bags); they're optional.

Thank you WV! I think something like this will work for me. I appreciate the picture. The more types of tarps and modifications I see, the more capable I feel of modifying with good decisions.

Post some pics of your finished product. I have one of the same tarps from ENO and was thinking of making that mod as well.
