is there a way to tell the difference between nylon and poly straps

i got a set of heavy duty ratchet straps that ive had for a long time and only used once so they are like new and it says on the tag that they have a max load of 1500lbs and a working load of 500 they are 1'' wide and probably 6' long and black but the tag doesnt say what there made of and i know yall said that nylon will stretch and wont work for straps so is there anyway that i can tell what they are made of without just trying them would hate to ruin a set of straps and they not work

    thanks again

Hard to say...most are nylon but, some are polypro. You could just pass the tag end through the hole on the hook around a tree and rig up your hammock. You will know in minutes what you have...If they don't work then you still have your straps intact.
Just when I thought you couldn't possibly be any dumber, you go and do something like this... and totally redeem yourself!

Use them while sleeping in your hammock. If you wake up with your butt on the ground, they're nylon.

All fibers have different burn/odor characteristics. There are some charts on line that spell that all out. Somewhere on the forum at least one chart has been posted but I can't remember where. Do a google search for fabric id burning and you'll probably find something.

My experience is that cargo straps are often polyester because nylon stretches more and that not a good thing when securing loads. Polypro is not as abrasion resistant and that's not a good thing either.

One warning... old synthetic straps can be problematic for suspensions because they may be degraded if they have been stored exposed to sunlight. Lay the straps out in a well lit area and look for _any_ variations in color hue. If some spots look faded while others are deep black you may want to just go out and buy a new set. You don't want the straps to break under load while you are in the hammock.
I may be slow... But I sure am gimpy.

Glad to hear that you've got your original tacoing problems resolved and are now loving the hammock.

yea i do but im thinking that since all the trees i have around here a way far apart then it is still stretching the hammock tighter than what it should so i need to set up a internal ridge line i think that that will help out greatly
